Bradykinin

Bradykinin is a kinin-family peptide studied in signaling and receptor pharmacology. Cellular models expressing the rat B2 receptor have characterized responses to bradykinin and related molecules. Derivatives must not be confused with the original peptide.

Mechanism described in the literature

In Xenopus oocytes expressing rat B2 receptors, bradykinin produced an ionic current response. Comparison with other ligands helped functionally classify the receptor alongside its identification as a G protein-coupled receptor.

What identifies B2

The cloning study combined genetic information and functional responses. Des-Arg9-bradykinin did not reproduce the bradykinin response in that system. This difference helped characterize the receptor; it does not demonstrate that the derivative lacks activity in every biological preparation.

Analogs are tools, not synonyms

Structure-activity studies compared modified peptides in different experimental preparations. Some behaviors depended on tissue and species. A molecule designed from bradykinin retains a structural relationship but may have a different functional profile and requires its own identification.

Binding and response are separate questions

Recognizing a receptor does not necessarily produce the same signal as bradykinin. The cited studies distinguish binding, partial response and opposition to an experimental response. Interpreting these categories requires the exact ligand, system and measured variable, not merely an agonist or antagonist label.
