Buserelin
Buserelin is a synthetic GnRH analog used to investigate pituitary response and desensitization. Its literature shows why a single hormone measurement does not describe the tissue's full functional state.

Mechanism described in the literature
In rat pituitary studies in vitro, buserelin stimulates LH release and permits examination of responses after previous exposure. Observed desensitization should not be interpreted as uniform loss of every cellular function.

Initial stimulation versus responsiveness
A 1989 study compared buserelin, GnRH and a protein kinase C pathway stimulus. After desensitization, cells still responded to the latter in vitro. This control distinguished an altered GnRH response from a general inability to release LH.
Hormone reserves and recovery do not coincide
Another study examined rat pituitaries after prior buserelin exposure. LH and FSH reserves and some forms of secretion recovered without equivalent restoration of the LH response to GnRH.
The measured variable changes the conclusion
Hormone content, spontaneous secretion and response to stimulation are distinct readouts. Buserelin research compares them within one experimental problem. Calling a pituitary recovered requires specifying which variable normalized; one does not automatically represent the others.
Questions and answers
Does desensitization mean the cell stopped functioning?
No. The cited cellular study retained an in vitro response to another stimulus despite changed GnRH sensitivity.
Do normal reserves imply a normal response?
The rat research showed that these measurements can diverge.
