Peptide hormone

Calcitonin

Calcitonin is a peptide hormone studied in calcium signaling research. In cellular models, its receptor has been associated with cyclic AMP responses. Species must be identified: human and salmon calcitonin are not interchangeable names for one material.

This is a research reference, not a product offered in the Asciende catalog. Published studies do not establish the identity, purity or availability of a commercial preparation.

Concentration, tissue and vascular response

Keep controls beside the described effect. Response direction alone does not establish selectivity or applicability beyond the model.

  • Was the response measured at a receptor, in isolated tissue or in intact circulation?
  • Do the preparation and context support attribution of the readout to the studied entity?
  • Does the comparison preserve species, time and method or change more than one variable?

Mechanism described in the literature

In COS-cell models, a receptor cloned from porcine kidney cells bound salmon calcitonin and produced a cyclic AMP response. This links ligand, receptor and second messenger within that specific material combination.

Other names in the literature

Ligand name and receptor origin

A publication may combine a peptide from one species with a receptor from another; the 1991 cloning work is an example. Both identifiers must accompany comparisons. Saying only that calcitonin was studied omits a distinction relevant to binding and cellular response.

Why it appears alongside CGRP

A study of the human gene described alternative messenger RNAs encoding calcitonin or CGRP precursors. Their relationship concerns RNA processing, not two names for the same peptide. A shared genetic origin does not make their receptors or experimental results equivalent.

What expression analysis adds

The human study identified RNA and peptide products in pituitary and medullary thyroid tumor samples. This supports discussion of expression in those samples. It does not alone measure function in every tissue or justify assigning a tumor sample's behavior to the entire organism.

Questions and answers

Are calcitonin and CGRP synonyms?

No. Alternative RNA processing explains their genetic relationship but produces distinct precursors and peptides.

Does a salmon-calcitonin assay directly describe human calcitonin?

No. Comparison requires the peptide species, receptor used and measured experimental variable.
