What gene-related means

The 1982 work showed that alternative RNA processing could produce messages encoding different polypeptides. CGRP's name reflects that genetic relationship. It does not mean the peptide is calcitonin renamed or necessarily produced by cleaving already formed calcitonin.

From RNA to the studied molecule

That study found different message distributions in thyroid and hypothalamus. RNA evidence explains what product can be encoded but does not replace peptide identification in a sample. Message, molecular product and functional response are different experimental levels.

Reading a receptor experiment

RAMP1 characterization illustrates why the proteins present in an assay must be documented. Comparing publications also requires the CGRP form, species and measured variable. A cellular signaling response alone does not describe every process involving this neuropeptide.

Is CGRP a calcitonin fragment?

The cited genetic work describes alternative RNA-processing products, not conversion of mature calcitonin into CGRP.

Does RNA detection measure functional CGRP?

No. Identifying the peptide and measuring a response require evidence beyond detecting the genetic message.
