Cotadutide

What the liver data establish

The fifty-four-week study enrolled adults with overweight or obesity and type 2 diabetes. Initial primary endpoints were HbA1c and weight. Liver analyses used enzymes and noninvasive indices, including exploratory analyses. Observed liver-parameter changes are not biopsy-demonstrated fibrosis reversal.

What the kidney trial measured

In adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease, some cotadutide groups showed lower urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratios than placebo. The primary endpoint concerned albuminuria and follow-up was limited. This did not demonstrate prevention of long-term kidney failure.

Why endpoint hierarchy matters

A biomarker can justify further research without resolving the broader clinical question. Separate primary results, exploratory analyses and outcomes never measured. This prevents a plausible hypothesis from being presented as a confirmed conclusion.

Questions and answers

Does albuminuria represent complete kidney function?

No. It is a specific measurement, not every component of kidney function or future events.

Do liver indices replace a biopsy?

Not automatically. Each method has a purpose, and the conclusion must match the measurement actually performed.
