Endothelin-1

Endothelin-1 is a signaling peptide in the endothelin family. Initial experiments linked material produced by endothelial cells to vascular contraction. It must be distinguished from other endothelins, their precursors and the receptors recognizing them.

Mechanism described in the literature

In cellular models, a cloned bovine receptor selectively recognized endothelins, preferentially ET-1. Its organization placed it among G protein-coupled receptors, providing a molecular explanation of ligand recognition.

Endothelium as a signal source

The 1988 work identified a peptide produced by endothelial cells and examined experimental activity. This transformed an observed response into molecular questions about the substance present and how it was recognized. The historical description is not an evaluation of every endothelial function.

Family does not mean identity

The receptor study compared related endothelins and found recognition differences. ET-1, ET-2 and ET-3 must retain their specific names in a synthesis. A statement about endothelins may describe the family but cannot assign every other member's findings to ET-1.

Historical hypothesis versus receptor evidence

The initial publication discussed mechanistic explanations available at the time. Subsequent cloning supplied direct receptor evidence. Distinguish hypotheses proposed during discovery from interactions characterized later; treating them as equally supported obscures how the evidence developed.

Questions and answers

Are endothelin-1 and its receptor the same thing?

No. ET-1 is the peptide ligand; the receptor is the protein used to study recognition.

Can an ET-3 finding be cited as ET-1 evidence?

Not without a direct comparison. Receptor research found differences among family members.
