Mechanism described in the literature
In vitro studies with modified CHO cells and a mouse receptor found FGF-2 binding dependent on heparan sulfate context. This identifies a contribution from the cell surface beyond receptor presence alone.

The cell surface is part of the system
The 1991 study compared cells with glycosaminoglycan alterations. Receptor expression did not restore FGF-2 binding without heparan sulfate; reconstitution experiments provided further evidence. This concerns that modified system and does not make heparin, heparan sulfate and FGF-2 interchangeable ingredients (PMID 1847668).
A normal general appearance may conceal differences
The 1998 study found regional cortical-organization changes and delayed closure of experimental skin wounds in FGF-2-deficient mice despite a general appearance resembling controls. Histology and follow-up detected what visual appearance did not. This concerns genetic loss, not exposure to an FGF-2 preparation (PMID 9576942).
Isoforms and genetic loss need precise names
The mouse model eliminated the FGF-2 isoforms examined by the authors. Its phenotype cannot be assigned entirely to one recombinant preparation or used to predict adding that preparation elsewhere. Identify the protein form and distinguish binding studies, genetic-expression removal and whole-tissue observation.
Questions and answers
Does receptor expression guarantee an FGF-2 response?
No. The cited CHO model showed that heparan sulfate context also mattered.
Does the deficient mouse demonstrate the effect of adding FGF-2?
No. Genetic absence and protein exposure are different interventions.
