Galanin
Galanin is a neuropeptide initially characterized from material isolated from porcine intestine. Its early literature connects peptide chemistry, tissue responses and receptor expression, three levels that must remain distinct when interpreting a publication.

Mechanism described in the literature
A cloned human galanin receptor expressed in COS cells recognized galanin from different species and mediated reduced adenylyl cyclase activity in vitro. This finding concerns the receptor and cellular system examined.

Intestinal isolation and the neuropeptide designation
The 1983 study began with intestinal extract and a chemical detection strategy. It then characterized isolated material and examined responses in rat smooth-muscle preparations and a canine model. The origin of the discovery sample does not itself limit a molecule's distribution.
From complete tissue to an expressed receptor
The 1994 investigation isolated complementary DNA from a human cell line and verified ligand recognition after receptor expression.
