GLP-1 is a peptide hormone derived from proglucagon. The literature describes forms with different processing, so a reference to GLP-1 should identify the material examined.

Mechanism described in the literature
In perfused rat pancreas, GLP-1(7-37) stimulated insulin secretion in the presence of glucose, whereas GLP-1(1-37) did not show that response under the compared conditions. Molecular form was essential to interpreting the experiment.

Processing is part of identity
The 1987 study compared synthetic peptides corresponding to different GLP-1 forms. Beyond documenting a response, it shows why preparations with similar abbreviated names can represent different experimental materials. The general name cannot replace a description of the form analyzed.
Intact molecule and degradation products
A 1995 investigation tracked labeled peptides by chromatography. In vitro and in rats, the authors observed GLP-1 processing by dipeptidyl peptidase IV. Comparison with animals deficient in that enzyme linked the appearance of truncated products to a specific degradation pathway.
What a GLP-1 measurement counts
The degradation study noted that some assays might not distinguish intact hormone from its products. A published concentration therefore requires knowing what the method recognizes. Total immunoreactivity and a measurement specific to the intact form do not necessarily answer the same question.
Questions and answers
Is GLP-1 another name for semaglutide?
No. GLP-1 identifies the reference hormone; semaglutide is an analog. Sharing a target does not establish molecular identity.
Does every GLP-1 measurement represent intact hormone?
Not necessarily. It depends on analytical specificity and whether the method distinguishes processing products.
