Motilin
Motilin is a peptide hormone studied in gastrointestinal motility. Comparative evidence includes precursor characterization, recombinant receptors and tissue preparations; each preserves different information about the species and material used.

Mechanism described in the literature
In cellular models expressing the rabbit motilin receptor, motilin mobilized calcium. Comparison with the human receptor showed pharmacological similarities, but tissue experiments also included a motilin analog that must be identified separately.

Species is part of experimental identity
A 1999 study characterized the motilin precursor in chickens, dogs, cattle and horses. It found different degrees of conservation across precursor regions. This enables study of molecular relationships without assuming that the entire precursor, its processing and functions are identical across species (PMID 10564829).
An isolated receptor and tissue give different readouts
The 2003 investigation combined cells expressing recombinant receptors with rabbit stomach preparations. The motilin analog and erythromycin produced different time courses in tissue. Sharing a target is therefore insufficient to assign a common response curve to two ligands (PMID 14504130).
Precursor, hormone and analog
The precursor contains regions absent from the mature hormone. An experimental analog introduces a deliberate modification relative to the reference material. A precursor DNA sequence, a motilin measurement and an analog response are therefore not interchangeable evidence.
Questions and answers
Is erythromycin in the study another form of motilin?
No. It is a different pharmacological comparator, although the study examines responses associated with the same receptor.
Does the precursor sequence correspond to the mature hormone?
No. The comparative study distinguishes the motilin region from other precursor regions.
