Neuromedin S
Neuromedin S is a neuropeptide identified in rat brain and structurally related to neuromedin U. Its research highlights an important distinction: studying the peptide differs from studying every function of neurons that express it.

Mechanism described in the literature
NMS was identified as a ligand of a receptor previously characterized for neuromedin U. In rats, researchers observed suprachiasmatic neuronal responses and phase shifts in locomotor activity.

Identification linked the molecule and circadian clock
The 2005 study combined isolation, gene expression and circadian observations. Reported rat-brain NMS distribution was concentrated in the suprachiasmatic nucleus. It also examined light-dark conditions versus constant darkness, preserving environment as part of the design.
The marker peptide does not describe the whole Nms neuron
A later animal investigation altered the molecular clock in Nms-expressing neurons and observed changes in network timing and behavior. Yet mice lacking both Nms and Nmu retained circadian rhythms in vivo. This comparison prevents concluding that the NMS peptide alone is indispensable for generating those rhythms.
Removing a peptide versus blocking transmission
The same study examined vesicular transmission from Nms neurons. Blocking it altered suprachiasmatic timing mechanisms in animals. This affects communication by a neuronal population and is not equivalent to removing only NMS. The difference is central to the finding, not a contradiction to hide.

Are NMS and NMU the same molecule?
No. They share a structural region and receptor recognition, but the publications identify different peptides.
Does an Nms neuron demonstrate an NMS-exclusive function?
No. Nms identifies a neuronal population; changing its clock or transmission can affect functions not dependent exclusively on the peptide.
