Mechanism described in the literature
In vitro, NMU mobilized calcium in cells expressing NMUR2. Another investigation examined NMUR1 signaling in type 2 innate lymphoid cells; these systems should not be treated as equivalent responses.

How NMUR2 was characterized
The 2000 study began with similarity to a known receptor, cloned the candidate and verified its response after expression in cells. Human tissue analysis found greater RNA abundance in the central nervous system. Transcript presence and receptor function were complementary assessments.
What the pulmonary model added
A 2017 investigation combined single-cell sequencing with functional mouse experiments. NMU together with IL-25 amplified the evaluated pulmonary inflammatory response. The combination matters; the finding cannot be attributed without qualification to isolated peptide in any tissue. Receptor distribution defines the question
Finding a receptor in a cell population suggests where to investigate a signal but does not alone establish its functional consequence. NMUR2 and NMUR1 experiments answer different questions. Useful comparisons preserve the subtype, cell population and accompanying signals.

Are NMUR1 and NMUR2 two names for one receptor?
No. The publications distinguish receptor subtypes and examine them in different experimental systems.
Does the pulmonary response demonstrate a general NMU effect?
No. It concerns a mouse model and conditions that included other signals, including IL-25.
