B-type natriuretic peptide
B-type natriuretic peptide takes its historical name from identification in porcine brain. Later research in human samples documented its relationship with the heart. Species and analyzed material must accompany any description of BNP.

Mechanism described in the literature
In experimental models, the initially isolated porcine peptide showed natriuretic activity and vascular-tone responses. The later human study examined synthesis, secretion and clearance, providing physiological evidence distinct from initial characterization.

Why brain can be misleading
The historical term preserves the discovery site but does not restrict BNP to the brain. A 1991 study compared human samples and circulatory signals and identified a prominent ventricular contribution. B-type recognizes the family without implying anatomical exclusivity.
BNP and ANP are not duplicates
Porcine identification distinguished BNP from ANP despite some similar experimental responses. The human study also described differences in synthesis, secretion and clearance. Sharing a family or response variable is insufficient to substitute one molecule for another.
What an immunoreactive signal measures
The human work used radioimmunoassay and other approaches to study BNP. Antibody recognition and identification of a molecular form provide complementary evidence. Retain the method and examined population rather than treating published concentrations as universal values.

Is BNP found exclusively in the brain?
No. Its historical name does not summarize distribution; the cited human research documented cardiac synthesis and secretion.
Does the porcine BNP description define the human molecule?
