C-type natriuretic peptide

C-type natriuretic peptide belongs to the natriuretic peptide family and was initially identified in porcine brain. In cellular models, CNP showed preferential recognition by ANPR-B. Family membership does not imply functional equivalence to ANP or BNP.

Mechanism described in the literature

In cellular models expressing human receptors, CNP activated the ANPR-B guanylyl cyclase and showed a different pattern at ANPR-A. Cyclic GMP responses thus enabled investigation of receptor selectivity.

Peptide and receptor letters do not correspond

CNP is the C-type peptide, while ANPR-B names a receptor studied with it. Confusing these letters can wrongly associate it with BNP. These names belong to different classification systems and should be written fully when comparing ligands.

Distinct molecular forms exist

After initial isolation, an extended form called CNP-53 was identified in porcine brain alongside CNP-22. These designate specific materials. A finding with one should not be transferred to the other without checking the study's actual comparison.

What selectivity demonstrates

Experiments with defined receptors attribute signaling differences to the tested molecular system. They do not alone provide a complete comparison of renal responses across the family. Tissue isolation and receptor characterization answer complementary questions using different materials and variables.

Questions and answers

Is CNP another name for BNP?

No. They are distinct family members; the B in the receptor studied with CNP does not turn the ligand into BNP.

Is CNP alone enough to describe experimental material?

Specifying molecular form and species is preferable. Isolation studies described more than one form.
