Urocortin-1

Urocortin-1 is a neuropeptide in the corticotropin-releasing factor family. Initial publications call it urocortin; that historical name should not be extended to other numbered family members.

Local signaling and experimental context

Record where and how the measurement was made. Presence of a peptide in a system does not establish that a commercial preparation reproduces that system.

  • Does the interpretation distinguish signal detection from demonstration of its function in that model?

Mechanism described in the literature

In vitro studies with experimentally expressed receptors found urocortin activity at CRF type 1 and type 2 receptors. The foundational investigation also examined hormone secretion and neuronal activity markers in preclinical models.

A family does not imply one receptor profile

The 1995 work combined localization in rat brain, cloning and pharmacological comparison. Urocortin and CRF did not show the same relative profile at the type 2 receptor. Comparative affinity and cellular responses provided complementary evidence for proposing a ligand-receptor relationship (PMID 7477349).

Local expression in cardiac cells

A 1998 publication sought urocortin RNA in a cell line and primary rat cardiac myocyte cultures. Molecular analysis verified the amplified product's identity. Transcript detection supported local expression but did not replace the separately performed functional experiment (PMID 9639256).

What a hypoxia response in culture means

In vitro, the peptide was associated with less cell death during hypoxia in those myocytes. This outcome concerns cultured cells; it does not measure cardiac pumping or whole-organ performance. Separating expression, viability and organ function prevents a cellular result from becoming a general cardiovascular conclusion.
