In rat collecting ducts perfused in vitro, vasopressin caused a reversible redistribution of water channels to the apical membrane, accompanied by increased water permeability. The experiment connected cellular localization with function rather than measuring only total channel abundance.

Where the channel is matters

The 1995 renal study examined permeability and AQP-CD channel distribution in the same tubules. Both changed together during vasopressin exposure in vitro and reversed after withdrawal. This time-course comparison supports redistribution without requiring every rapid response to be explained by new protein synthesis.

A ligand can recognize related receptors

A 2013 study characterized experimentally expressed mouse oxytocin, V1a and V1b receptors. In vitro binding and signaling assays compared vasopressin, oxytocin and analogues. Natural-ligand selectivity was consistent with earlier human and rat findings, but such conservation does not make the receptors identical.

Complementary experimental scales

A collecting duct retains tissue organization that an expressed receptor in a cell line cannot fully reproduce. Controlled expression, in turn, helps separate receptor subtypes. Reading both types of study together addresses ligand recognition and accompanying cellular reorganization without attributing all findings to the same system.
