What are peptides?
Understanding a peptide starts with its sequence and modifications. Reading its evidence also requires knowing the system in which it was studied.

The sequence identifies part of the story
Peptides are chains of linked amino acids. Residue order, termini, stereochemistry and other modifications can distinguish entities with similar names. An alias therefore helps locate a reference but does not replace its chemical definition.
Fragment, analog and mixture
A fragment refers to part of a reference sequence. An analog incorporates structural differences; a mixture contains components that must be identified separately. These distinctions determine which literature is relevant and which results cannot be transferred automatically.
Method and model accompany the result
A binding assay, a cellular response and an observation in an organism answer different questions. To interpret a publication, preserve the studied entity, model, measured variable, comparator and limitations. A mechanism description is not a recommendation for personal use.
