Protective equipment for peptide laboratory work
Protection is selected for hazards of the complete task, including solvents and equipment. The safety data sheet, procedure and institutional assessment should guide controls; gloves alone do not resolve inhalation, splash or fire hazards.

Describe the task before choosing protection
Opening a solid, preparing a mixture and moving waste are different activities. Identify possible exposure, substances and containment for each. The same coat and glove should not be assumed suitable for every solvent.
If safety or compatibility information is missing, resolve that gap before starting. A small quantity does not automatically remove procedural hazards.
Case: the solution contains a flammable solvent
A reagent’s refrigeration requirement does not authorize storing a flammable mixture in any refrigerator. Check equipment classification, compatibility and local procedure. Princeton EHS distinguishes equipment appropriate for that storage; this reference does not certify your refrigerator.
Prepare the end of the process too
Decide where containers, sharps and waste will go before starting. Labels should preserve mixture hazards, not only the peptide name. Disposal conditions and incident response belong in the laboratory procedure.
A record for this decision
Which specific exposure is each procedural measure intended to control?
| Field | What to document |
|---|---|
| Hazard | Material state, solvents, amounts and operation. |
| Control | Containment, ventilation and protection compatible with the hazard. |
| Response | Safety data sheet, spill procedure and internal contacts. |
When to leave the decision open
For a spill with possible flammable vapor, restrict access and activate the laboratory procedure. Do not operate switches or disconnect appliances in the hazard area.
Questions and answers
What if I suspect flammable vapors inside a refrigerator?
Do not open it or connect or disconnect power; do not operate switches in the suspected area. Move away, notify the safety lead and follow the laboratory emergency plan.
Are nitrile gloves suitable for every mixture?
Do not assume so. Selection requires checking components, expected exposure and manufacturer compatibility data.
